When Ben receives a puppy as a gift, teddy feels neglected. When the puppy wants to play with teddy, Ben doesn’t want to share! Can the three of them play together? This story is about relationships and sharing.

I wrote Playmates for a very young audience. The language is simple and positive. The pictures use a lot of white space and frontal perspective so that they are clear and easily read. I employed mostly bright colours. The main technique is coloured pencil with watercolour on rag paper.

My four year old grandson posed as Ben. I drew his actual toys and furniture ...and a floppy teddy that could be placed in numerous positions to express emotions. I chose a Labrador puppy because it was robust and could enter easily into a tug of war. This story is particularly about feelings and is useful to start discussions with children.
