Playmates, (2002).

When Ben receives a puppy as a gift, teddy feels neglected.
When the puppy wants to play with teddy, Ben doesn’t want to share!

Can the three of them play together?

This story is about relationships and sharing.

Personal:

I wrote Playmates for a very young audience.

The language is simple and positive. The pictures use a lot of white space and frontal perspective so that they are clear and easily read.
I employed mostly bright colours. The main technique is coloured pencil with watercolour on rag paper.

My four year old grandson posed as Ben. I drew his actual toys and furniture... and a floppy teddy that could be placed in numerous positions to express emotions. I chose a Labrador puppy because it was robust and could enter easily into a tug of war. This story is particularly about feelings and is useful to start discussions with children.
